Fisher chased a few little mechanical issues, which are to be expected considering he first saw the car one week before the event. Reed had a whopper of an introduction as he spun in some oil on his second turn in a race! More on that oil later. In American Iron, there were only two cars in attendance that weekend. In race one, Craig McCormick got the best of Casey Holdway and took the AI win. Both drivers enjoyed the added speed due to the AI rule change for 2020 that dropped the weight-to-power ratio. McCormick ran a 1:43.611, narrowly grabbing the lap record that Mason Melkowitz and Team Downunder had set in 2009! In Camaro-Mustang Challenge, Joshua Sooknanan took first, with Read More 4 02, 2020 NASA Southeast Spec Miata Sizzles at Roebling Road Season Opener NASA Southeast Spec Miata kicked off the 2020 season at Roebling Road with an 18-car field. Qualifying on pole was 2019 Mark Donohue Award recipient, Broderick Bauguess, with a 1:22.764, with Keith Williamson P2, just .001 second in front of P3 Yan Dia, Grant West P4 and Aide Crouse P5. At the start, Bauguess had the inside line and got a good run, leading Dia and Crouse out of Turn 2. West picked off Williamson entering Turn 3. On the next lap, Bauguess — racing for the first time in Spec Miata — got a lesson in the value of bump-drafting as Dia and Crouse bump-drafted past him and West drafted up beside him as they entered Turn 1. Bauguess and West then entered Turn 3 side by side, with Bauguess giving up the position as the pair entered Turn 4. And try, and try and try. Such is the case with Peter Hopelain and Team Technik Competition, which took its first class win in E2 at the 2019 25 Hours of Thunderhill Presented by Hawk Performance after more than a decade of trying. Team Technik Competition battled back and forth — and sometimes in contact— with a tight field in E2, a class that showcased the closest racing in last year’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Hopelain, who also hosts the Technik podcast on SoundCloud.com, has been chasing this rabbit a long time, and he’s been getting closer and closer ever since the team built the 2003 BMW 330i specifically for racing enduros. We caught up with Hopelain in mid-January to find out a bit more about what it took, and what it felt like to finally get a Read More 28 01, 2020 NASA Southeast Honda Challenge Kicks Off 2020 at Roebling Road Raceway So much for being off during the winter season. In the Southeast, we race! 2020 started in Savannah, Ga., with an open-track day full of test-and-tune drivers, competition school students, and an instructors clinic. It ended with a two-hour TREC race, which every comp school student completed. Those guys were tired at the end of the day! When the racing weekend kicked off Saturday, H2 racers Karl Kondor, Michael Kramer and Shane Lovely got a great start passing one of the H1 cars before they entered Turn 1. As they settled into their race, they began swapping the lead among all three of them. Kondor was in the lead at the beginning, but slid to track edge a few times, allowing Lovely and Kramer take advantage and get around him. By midrace, Lovely was in second, trying to reel in Kramer when he put four wheels off in Turn 9 leading Read More 21 01, 2020 One Driver, Two Teams, 25 Hours NASA NorCal racer Tommy Lo raced in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill for the first time in 2003, the inaugural year the race expanded from 12 to 25 hours. From that moment on, Lo has been enticed by the allure of the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, the longest closed course endurance race in North America. “There were five of us who ran it, and then ever since I’ve been hooked. Driving at night on the hill, and then sharing a bowl of chili with friends at 3:00 in the morning, there’s nothing like it,” Lo said. “So ever since then, I’ve run with other teams, I’ve put together my own team. And it’s always that element of luck that’s been missing. And we always do well. Team Technik Competition driver Matt Million posted this video from the time he strapped into the car on grid and about an hour of seat time at the start of the race. Read More 24 12, 2019 Grant West Takes Final Spec Miata Win of the NASA Southeast 2019 Season Seventeen Spec Miata racers rolled into Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta to wrap up the 2019 season at the Santa’s Toy Run event. Teen Mazda Challenge racer Aiden Crouse had already locked up the Southeast Spec Miata championship. However, it was still a four-way battle for second place with Keith Williamson, Yan Dia, Teen Mazda racer Grant West and Brad Miller dueling for the last two podium spots in the Southeast Region championship. Aiden Crouse showed the class how to do it in qualifying by winning pole position with a 1:46.132, followed by West, William Cox, Williamson, Dia and Miller. On the start, the outside group got a good run, with Miller giving Williamson a good bump and in turn launching West into the lead as the outside trio made it to the top of hill at Turn 3 first, with Cox P4 and Dia/Crouse going through Turn 3 side by side.
